When Koalas Attack

The weather in Cairns has not been good since we got here a day ago.  Cloudy, off and on rain and choppy water.  Yesterday we slept for a bit after getting to the hotel at 5am after our overnight trip.  We slept until 12ish and we were hungry, so we head down the street from our hotel to the water.  There are no beaches in Cairns, so the boardwalk is along a lagoon which was dry quite a ways out until it hit the ocean--very strange.

We settled on a pizza place outside--very good pizza!!  After walking around a bit, we got gelato which was amazing and head back to the hotel when it started to rain.  I booked a snorkeling trip for tomorrow with a smaller boat which only takes out 20 people.  Hopefully the weather will hold out and we have a good day out at the great barrier reef.

Today we head to the Cairns Tropical Zoo so I could make another check off my bucket list--holding a koala.  We got there at 9:30, when the first koala cuddling was held.  Koala holding is very regulated and a koala can only be held for an hour a day. I wanted to make sure to get there right away, as I didn't know how busy it would be.  Lucky there was only two other people there.

The koala was very cute and cuddly but she decided to poop a little in my hand!!! Glenn thinks she felt very comfortable with me.  When the trainer took her back, I quickly threw down the turd in my hand.  Glenn was upset he didn't get a picture of that.

Other than the poop in my hand, the koala did leave another lasting memory for me:

The claws were pretty sharp and left a scrape on my arm.  I was surprised it wasn't on my shoulder as she was digging into my shoulder as you can see from the picture.   I wasn't thinking when I got dressed this morning.

The zoo was small but had some great animals. We went to a free flight bird show which kind of freaked me out but Glenn loved it.  The birds were flying right in between people and so close to our heads.

Cute kangaroo:

I thought this sign was pretty funny

DINGO!

Red Panda--love him!

Scary huge boa--ick!  I didn't take this picture!

On the way back to the hotel--the mountains surround the road.  As you can see it was pretty overcast.

  1. The trip looks fantastic! You guys must be having a blast. Admittedly the koala turd and bug on the pillow had me rolling. I could just picture both of them! Stay safe.
